"Adrienne" Moment - ATM Card

I had an "Adrienne" Moment this morning. What are Adrienne Moments, you ask? It's one of those moments when I think to myself "this stuff only happens to me". Like the time in college when I locked my keys in my car.... with it running. Or when I locked my keys in my car the night I interviewed for my Purdue Extension job and Nancy (my boss) let me use her AAA card to call a locksmith to get them out. Amazingly enough, they still hired me. Or the time I locked myself out of the office- my keys, purse, and my dog were in the office- and I had to borrow Kay's car (one of the 4H volunteers) to run down to Nancy's house to get her key. That was excellent. These were all "Adrienne Moments". Most of my moments involve keys of some kind.

This morning I remembered that I needed to get some cash from the ATM. I don't make too many trips to the ATM these days. Nick is my ATM- when he gets cash, he gets me some and it magically appears on my dresser. It usually works great. Because of this, I haven't yet memorized my pin number to my new debit card. But Nick is at the State Fair, so I was on my own. I looked for the paper that the bank sent with my pin on it and couldn't find it. I was fairly certain I knew what it was and decided to just go ahead and try it. The first guess didn't work... so I thought "Oh, it must be this". Well, that didn't work either. And while I pondered my third option, the machine terminated my session and gave me a receipt. But my card never came out. I looked in my car to see if it was there- it wasn't. So I thought while I was pondering, the card had fallen on the ground. It hadn't. So I looked in the little slot where you put the card to see if it was jammed in there. It wasn't- but I'm sure the little camera they have in there got a nice close-up of my nose hair. This is when I looked on the receipt to see "Too many incorrect pins. Card retained." Poop. Only that wasn't the word I used. The machine ATE MY CARD. I realize this is a safety feature to protect me, however, it's a little annoying when it's protecting me from myself. I had two hours before the bank opened. Which meant I was going to be about 3 hours late for work.
So... I called the office, told them my tale of lost ATM cards, laughed with Sharron (the secretary), and went home for another cup of coffee. When the bank opened- I got my card back. The teller asked me if I knew how to change my pin on the ATM machine. Let's see... Um... No. If I had, I would have changed it to a number I could remember before now! So we got that done, I got my cash, and I was on my way.
The scariest part is, she told me that this happens all the time! I did find some comfort that there are others like me that have their own "Adrienne Moments".
