Tuckered Out

Ever been so tired you don't know if you can stay awake for dinner?
Rachel had already had her supper...but was enjoying a snack with Daddy while he ate his supper while I was a book club. I came across the picture on the camera and I just had to share it!

Gallery of Sheer Delights

Last night we met for Book Club at the library. Since I had actually read the book this time and Nick didn't have a night meeting, I headed out for some adult conversation. We discussed the book "Madonna's of Leningrad" by Debra Dean. I really enjoyed the book and if you get a chance to read it, it's definetely one I'd recommend.
One of the women that comes to book club is Jerry. She's an adorable old woman who always seems to have an interesting story to share. Sometimes they relate to the book, sometimes they do not. Anyways, we were talking about journals and happy memories and she has what she calls her Gallery of Sheer Delights. The place where she files away all her happy memories that help her get through the tougher times. She said that it's not a place to go to hide, but rather a place to go to be rejuvinated to once again face the world. What happy memories would go in your Gallery?
I loved this idea and I also loved the idea another club member shared where you write down one happy memory from each day in a journal. What a great way to focus on the postive things in life...because even on a rotten day, there is still something good that happened. When our car broke down outside of Atlanta...that was a rotten day...but the look of sheer delight on Rachel's face when she got to ride on my lap in the front seat of the tow truck...well, that was priceless!

Balloons!!

Thank you for the balloons, Aunt Nikki! I've been enjoying playing with them for days!! Mommy keeps telling me to be careful or they'll pop but I don't think she knows what she's talking about.

Love, Rachel

Four Alarm Fire? Nope...just pan seared steak.

Ever since our awesome dinner at St. Elmo's in Indy last month, I've been wanting to try cooking steak in our cast iron skillet to sear in the juices. So last night, with Rachel happily eating Puffies in her bouncer, I got out the skillet and gave it a try. All was going well. I had turned the first steak over and it had the wonderful crispiness that was sealing in the juices. It wasn't until the second steak went in the pan that things got interesting. About 30 seconds after starting the second steak, the smoke detectors went off. I probably should have turned on the vent above the stove... I got out the broom and hit the reset button on the alarm...yelling "Ooops! Sorry!!" up the stairs to Nick. I no more than got back to the stove to check on my steak and they went off again. Rachel thought this was all very interesting watching Mommy run around with the broom. Pepper, on the other hand, did not find this very fun and was searching out a spot where the screaming alarm wouldn't burst her eardrums. The second time, Nick came down the stairs with a grin on his face. "Sorry, sorry, sorry!" I said, this time opening windows to help air out the smoke. The dectors went off yet a third time...thankfully, this time the steak was about done.
I had also made potatoes in the oven....along with roasted asparagus. Unfortunately, the potatoes stuck to the pan...and while they tasted good, the pan was a mess. This is when I knew I'd better offer to clean up my charred mess!
I called Nick to dinner saying "It tastes better than it sounds, I promise!!".
As Nick filled his plate, he took one look at the pans and said "I'm so glad I'm not doing the dishes." HA.
I think I'll leave the pan seared steak to St. Elmo's. Or at least make sure I have all the windows open before I try it again.
